Preparing for Childbirth-Home Information Pack


The Preparing for Childbirth Home Information Pack is designed for use by rural and remote pregnant couples or for those who are unable to attend an ante-natal course.  It comprises: 

2 Comprehensive Handbooks (to keep)

- Preparing for Birth: Fathers 

2 Videos (up to four weeks loan)

Birth  (70 minutes in eight separate segments)

This film from the UK follows eight women giving birth in a variety of circumstances; natural birth at home and in hospital, caesarean, twin and water births.  Each birth is beautifully filmed to show each mother triumphing in her own way as she gives birth.  Highly praised by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the Royal College of Midwives.

Dads (50 minutes)
A video aimed at fathers-to-be, to help them understand and cope with the changes in their lives brought about by parenthood.  Through the eyes of ten very different men their personal stories explores a variety of issues including relationships with partners, financial worries, loss of freedom and involvement in the birth.  Published: UK 1994

Aiming for Natural Birth (88 minutes)

This video follows a variety of couples through their preparations for a successful birth. It is divided into four parts: Physical preparation (information on diet, exercise and herbal medicine); emotional preparation (finding the right support person, understanding the father’s role during pregnancy and birth) , birth options (actual births in hospital, birth centre and home, including a water birth) ; stage of labour. There is advice from an obstetrician, naturopath, midwife, herbalist and childbirth educators.  Published: Australia 1999.

Inner Strength (42 minutes)
This video follows three women labouring naturally using all their inner resources to give birth using water, a midwife and a partner.  It is raw, moving, joyous and exhilarating; noisy powerful and uplifting. Published: Austria 2003.

Positions for Birth (17 minutes)
Provides women with various positions that can be used at various stages through labour that are comfortable and effective.  Published: 1993

 SIDS (Video and Powerpoint presentation)
Shows how parents can prevent their baby from suffering from SIDS.
